Election: Rivers get toll free line for reporting violence against women

By: Admin

Residents of Rivers State now have a toll-free call  centre  to report any case of violence against women on or before the 2019 general election.

Senior Programme Manager, Gender and Development Action GADA, Iyingi Irimagha, stated this during a peace walk organised by the group with support from National Democratic Institute, NDI, to encourage women to participate in the  February and March elections in the state.

According to Irimagha, the toll-free  line was made available in order to ensure that women would not be intimidated or harassed in the process of exercising their voting rights in polling units and wards across the 23 local government areas of Rivers state.

She said, “We are hoping that with this peace walk, women will be able to vote. The most important thing is sharing the hotline because there may be some violence issues women might likely face while trying to vote and don’t know whom to call.

“With support from the National Democratic Institute, we were able to have a toll free line which is 080-011-00000, this line is free for women to call.

“The support centre is supposed to manage cases that women face during this election. The support centre is at the Rivers state ministry of women affairs.

“If there is an issue you can call the toll-free number or women can walk into the ministry and lodge in their complaints and they will be attended to‘’

The peace walk took off from the Ministry of Women Affairs, through Marine base, PHALGA, mile one market Diobu, D/Line and terminated at Aba road all in Port Harcourt.
