The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has cleared the Chairman Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Hon Danladi Yakubu Umar, of the N10 million bribery allegation leveled against him by one AbdulRashid Owolabi.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by the Head, Press and Public Relations of the Tribunal, Ibraheem Al-hassan, yesterday in Abuja.
The letter which was addressed to the Secretary to Government of the Federation, stated that the allegations against Justice Umar were mere suspicions and consequently insufficient to successfully prosecute the offence.
The letter captioned “RE: Investigation Report RE: N10 million Bribery Allegation Against the Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, Abuja” was signed by Emmanuel Adegboyega Aremo, Secretary to the Commission.
A part of the letter reads: “Kindly recall our correspondence of 5th March, 2015, (reference EFCC/EC/SGF/03/56) with the above subject, please,” it read.
“We would like to reiterate the Commission’s position in regard to this matter as earlier communicated to you and stated that the allegations leveled against Justice Umar were mere suspicions and consequently insufficient to successfully prosecute the offence.
“Today’s clearance letter is second to the previous one sent on March 5, 2015 during the last administration of President Goodluck Jonathan through the office of the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim.”
Justice Umar is presently sitting over the corruption and false asset declaration case against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
