United States government has dismissed claims by a governor in Nigeria that wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs Aisha Buhari is wanted for some alleged crimes in their country.
US made the clarification against the backdrop of allegations by the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who while reacting to the freezing of his bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had alleged that the wife of the President was avoiding travelling to the US because she was a wanted person in the country over her involvement in the $185m Halliburton scandal.
“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted in the Halliburton scandal. When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the judgment for people to see and read,” Fayose had said in the statement.
The Punch reports that Acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Lagos, Frank Sellin, said no there was no information linking Mrs. Buhari to crimes in the US.
The report quoted Sellin as saying, “Thank you for the inquiry. We have no information to provide on this matter.”
