The Federal Government has said that there will not be any sacred cow in its anti-corruption war. The assurance was given by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice , Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, yesterday, in his discussion entitled: Review of Law and Change in Buhari’s Administration, at the ongoing annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Malami said that the anti-graft war was to rid the nation of corruption and not to target any particular party.
“On the issue of lopsidedness in the fight against corruption, I think the question should be, is there any reasonable ground for suspicion of the commission of an offence? It is not about whether the offenders are PDP or APC members”.
“As lawyers, you have at your disposal the Freedom of Information Act and the right to seek for support for the prosecution of those suspected to have committed any offence” he said.
A former Resident Electoral Commissioner of Edo State, Mr. Mike Igini, who spoke at the event, urged the Federal Government to give more attention to the economy as it continues its fight against corruption.
“The belief and faith in democracy is on what it can achieve. All those elected into public offices have only one year and five months to perform. The truth is that 2018 is a campaign year while 2019 is for elections. So, they have till 2017 to fulfill their electoral promises. Consequently, looking at what is available, one should look at the law and see how we can tackle our economic problems while also fighting corruption,” Igini said.
