Rivers: Semenitari, others protest Atsuwete’s death

Following the assassination, Sunday night of a porpular Port Harcourt based human-rights lawyer, Ken Atsuwete, the Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commssion, NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari in conjunction with Civil Society Organisations, lawyers, family friends and well-wishers in Rivers State have staged a peaceful protest round the streets of Port Harcourt to demand the arrest and prosecution of the killers of the late activist.

The protesters marched from the police headquarters along Moscow Road to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Speaking on the sideline of the protest, Acting MD of the NDDC, Ibim Semenitari condemned the gruesome murder of Ken Atsuwete.

While calling for the prosecution of his killers, she however, said the protest has nothing to do with politics but in solidarity with the civil society and to speak out against the dastardly act.

Also, another human rights lawyer, Anyakwe Nsirimovu said the protest would continue until the killers of their colleague are apprehended and prosecuted.

The protesters also said the killing was an attempt to silence opposition voices in the state.

The protesters were dressed in black with the portrait of the slain lawyer on it.

They carried placards with the inscription “Who Killed Ken”.

Recalled that Atsuwete before his death was one the lead counsels to an All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain in the state, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree who is standing trial for allged murder.
