Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday amended the state’s Local Government Law to enable the governor reappoint anyone into local government’s Caretaker Committee, beyond the mandatory two terms as guarantted in the law.
The law was passed after 15 lawmakers present at the sitting carried out the amendment.
Leader of the House, Mr Martins Amewhule and Whip, Evans Bipi, in their contributions, said that the amendment is inteneded to reward hard work, as the state governor will no longer be limited by law to reappoint anyone into local government caretaker committees beyond the mandatory two terms of three months each when such a person has performed well
The law which is a one paragraph amendment reads thus:. “A Caretaker Committee appointed under sub-section 4, shall oversee the affairs of the local government for three months. The governor, in his discretion, can reappoint such a person for chairman or member, notwithstanding that the person has served two tenures”.
The bill which is an executive bill was forwarded to the house last week by the governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and presented by the leader, Martins Amaewhule.
