Catholic catechists in court over possession of firearms in Anambra

Three Catechists of the Roman Catholic Church were weekend arraigned before an Ogidi High Court in Anambra State.

The accused, Agbo Peter, Patrick Ajuluchukwu and Daniel Nwoye are facing a three-count charge of lawful possession of firearms, forceful entry and unlawful damages in Suit No. HID/41C/2016.

According to the Punch, a suspected accomplice, Solomon Igboji (the fourth accused), is on the run.

Their arraignment is in connection with an attack involving an 80-year-old widow, Mrs. Juliana Onuorah, and one Patricia Onuorah.

The counsel for the respondents, C.J. Asiegbu, raised a motion against the arraignment of the suspects but Mrs. Nwanegbo Ezeaputa from the office of the Attorney General of the state raised an objection and described the motion as incompetent.

Asiegbu said Ezeaputa’s objection should be in writing as required by law, contending that her oral objection was not what was required in law in the circumstance.

Asiegbu said, “She cannot spring such a surprise on us; the counsel should file a counter-motion if she is objecting to our motion.”

The Chief Judge, Justice Arinze Akabuo, said their offences were contrary to Section 115 of the Criminal Code.

Akabuo, however, adjourned the matter till November 17 for the hearing of the bail applications of the suspects.
