The police have arrested a member of the gang that killed Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammed Alkali, and his driver in Uju Forest, Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, with the late officer’s LG phone.
Top police sources revealed that Christian Chukwuemela Ekikeme, 22, was nabbed at about 6pm last Saturday, following six days of tracking the cult gang that ambushed and killed Mr. Alkali and his driver, Sergeant Peter Uchi, during the 10 December legislative re-run polls in the state.
The arrest we gathered was assisted by the support of the Police Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) and the 48 Division of Police Mobile.
Police sources disclosed that Ekikeme, also known as Prince Okoroma, an indigene of Okposi village, near Omoku, was arrested by the operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Response Team (IRT) in Omoku, when he came out from the creek to visit his girlfriend.
Sources revealed that he confessed to the beheading of the DSP, adding that his head and driver’s body were thrown into a river while the white Mitsubishi pick-up van belonging to the police was parked deep in Uju Forest with the key stuck in the ignition.
He also confessed that he and nine members of his gang members have seven AK-47 rifles, two pump action guns and that they ambushed the police team because they felt they were against their party.
The suspect listed other gang members as Kelvin, John Ahiakwo, Chukwuemela AKA Jungle Justice, Izu, Bright (Gang leader), Okechukwu, Ngozi, Christian, himself, and Kachi Nwokocha, who is their sponsor,” said a top source, who added that serious efforts are being made to arrest remaining gang members.
The suspect also led police detectives to Uju Forest where the white police pick-up vehicle was parked beside a shallow grave where Sgt. Uchi was buried.
