Obayemi take over as General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Adeboye retires

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has reportedly retired as the Head of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Nigeria.

Just last year, the church slammed those calling for the 74-year-old to retire as head of RCCG.

Pastor Johnson Odesola, Special Assistant to Pastor Adeboye on Administration and Personnel, said at the time that the church’s constitution did not state that anyone above 70 years should not lead the ministry.

He said: “Whereas the constitution provided that the deputy and assistant general overseers are appointed to retire at 70 and enjoy their retirement benefits for life, there is no such provision for the general overseer.”

Pastor J.O. Obayemi has been named as Adeboye’s successor.

Obayemi was a deputy in charge of Finance and a member of governing council, before his appointment.

‎The Church in further clarification through a press statement signed by Leke Adeboye, on Saturday explained that Pastor Adeboye remained the GO of RCCG Worldwide.

Leke Adeboye, the GO’s son and Personal Assistant said “the clarification is coming on the heels of misrepresentation of Pastor E. A Adeboye’s announcement at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving held at the redemption camp”.

He said that the Church in Nigeria was now to be led by Pastor Joseph Obayemi.

The statement clarified that “the latest development is sequel to the new legal requirements set up by the Financial Regulations Council, guiding all registered churches, mosques, and CSOs.

“The regulation stipulates that heads of non-profit organisations like churches now have a maximum period of twenty years to lead their organizations while in retirement, they are not permitted to hand over to their families”.

The statement also reiterated that Pastor Funsho Odesola will now serve as the new Church Secretary, while Pastor Joseph Adeyokunu is the new Church Treasurer.

It advised all members of RCCG “to understand this new structure and go about their service to God and humanity in holiness and soul winning.”
