Council boss, others escape assassination as gunmen disrupt PDP rally in Ikwerre

The chairman of Ikwere Local Government Area in Rivers State, Samuel Nwanosike and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escaped death by whiskers on Wednesday as yet to be identified gunmen stormed and shot at their rally in the area.

Reports had it that the gunmen opened fire on a PDP sensitization rally in Ipo/Omademe in Ikwerre LGA killing one person while others sustained live threatening degrees of injury.

This even as the PDP in the State has accused some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the LGA of masterminding the attack.

According to the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Emma Okah, he said the unprovoked attacked on the innocent partymen cannot be accepted by the state government.

He called on the security agencies to fish out perpetrators of the crime.

Meanwhile, the PDP spokesman in the state, Darlinghton Orji mention some members of the APC as being responsible for the dastardly act.

He said, “ At about 3.00 pm at our peaceful rally at Ipo community they just came out and started shooting at us”.

He continued that, “ I have wound on my hand, people died and others seriously injured in a peaceful event we went for”.

Orji recalled that just recently, the council chairman, Samuel Nwanosike had in a meeting with security agencies reported that the likes of Chukwudi Dimkpa, Best Amadi, Chibuike Ikenga, Ezemonye Ezekiel-Amadi and others held a meeting with a notorious and wanted cultists in the area by name School Boy with the sole mission to kill members of the party.

The PDP spokesman maintained that statements about the alleged plot of the APC stalwarts in the area have been submitted to the police.

However, spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni while confirming the incidence said no live was lost in the attack while the search for the culprits have started.

Omoni said, “ To the best of my knowledge, nobody died for now, but three persons sustained life threatening injuries and they are receiving treatment in unidentified hospitals.”
