Ogoni cleanup funds in danger – MOSOP alleges

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has raised an alarm that the cleanup funds for Ogoniland is in danger.

This is even as it said the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Programme, HYPREP,  is desperately moving to award contracts disregarding the establishment of the structures that should support the implementation especially the Integrated Soil Management Center, failing to provide basic support for the communities especially water and medical care and disregarding the standards set in the UNEP report.

Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke made this known in Bera, Gokana local government area, yesterday in an address to MOSOP chapter leaders.

Nsuke according to the Legborsi Pyagbara led executive council of MOSOP has been expelled but the former had insisted that he remained the Publicity Secretary of the Ogoni body.

He  said the desperation to award contracts as the 2019 elections draw closer without first providing water for the people and establishing the Integrated Soil Management Center as recommended by UNEP are clear indications that HYPREP has jettisoned the recommended standards and only interested in enriching certain individuals.

Nsuke warned that HYPREP’s desperation only puts the cleanup funds in danger which is capable of igniting community protests and cause crisis in Ogoniland.

He advised HYPREP to address the emergency measures and particularly commence the establishment of the Integrated Soil Management Center as recommended by UNEP.

“There is no way HYPREP can handle the massive wastes from the cleanup sites without the Integrated Soil Management Center in place” he said.

Nsuke maintained that the entire cleanup exercise as currently implemented is political and not designed to address Ogoni concerns.
