Murder charge: Ex-Rivers Assembly Leader must appear, court insist

By: Felix Ikpotor

Justice Chiwendu Nworgu of a Port Harcourt High Court has insisted that the former Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyd must appear in court to answer to murder charges preferred against him by the Rivers State government.

The judgment who gave the ruling on Thursday, said the state commissioner of police would be served a hearing notice to produce him in court on the 4th of February , 2019.

Earlier, counsel to Chidi Lloyd, Prince Azunda told the court to adjourn the case indefinitely sine there is a pending appeal against the matter.

“We are appealing against the suit itself and the bench warrant issued by the court,” he said.

But lawyer to the Rivers State government, Godwin Obla , SAN, said filing an appeal does not in anyway warrant a stay of execution as the Supreme Court had long clarified on that matter.

Obla insisted that Llyod’s absence from court is tantamount to contempt.

Mr. Chidi Llyod is facing three count charges bordering on attempted murder, destruction of public property and assault with intention to cause injury.
