Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University, RSU, Prof. Blessing Didia has warned students of the university against joining secret societies.

Didia gave the warning during the 37th matriculation ceremony of the school held on Wednesday.

He said although students have choices as part of academic freedom, but that the Senate of the school frowns at membership of secret societies.

He said “The senate of the university frowns seriously at membership of nocturnal and clandestine associations or what is commonly called secret cults. For the avoidance of doubt, the penalty for any student found to be a member is expulsion”.

Continuing he said: “ I therefore urge you to use you freedom sensibly. Avoid being lured into membership of such outlawed groups”.

While congratulating the matriculating students, the VC said they should consider themselves lucky for securing admission into the university out of the 9,786 who applied to the school for admission, stressing that they will have the opportunity to access the school’s world class facilities in digital and physical infrastructures.

While thanking the visitor to the school and the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for his support to the school, the VC said there is an ongoing collaboration between the school and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre Limited through the Rivers State Ministry of Employment to set up a fashion village at the university which is intended to train Rivers youths in fashion skills.

A total number of 3,780 students were admitted for the 2018/2019 academic session.
