Rivers: Council chair sends SOS to FG, RSG over flood

The council chairman of Ahoada West local government area in Rivers State, Mr. Hope Ikiriko, is now calling on the Federal government and State government for support following the persistent flooding in parts of the LGA.

Ikiriko stressed that the local government does not have the capacity to take care of the situation as it involves the opening of the waterways and dredging of the Orashi river.

He said: “The last time it happened the vice president visited us in this local government and all the promises that he gave no one has been achieved. Nothing, no assistance, we’re suffering and we’re calling on the federal government, and the state government to come to our aid.

“This is the time they should come to support our course because after now, we’ll record a lot of casualties as the effect of the flood is overwhelming.

“Ours is just to enlighten our people on how to cope with flood situation and also help them to evacuate and bring some palliative measures during that period.

“If it continues beyond what we have now, we’ll begin to send support for them financially and otherwise, create camps and do what we can to supply them food items, warm clothes, provide electricity and supply water to them.

“We can’t really cope because the population is much. It costs is much, we’ve not even recovered what we spent last year and now the flood is here again”.
