Following the flooding that has submerged over a thousand buildings in some communities of Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas of Rivers State, indigenes of the area are now living in fear of cholera and other water-borne diseases.
Some of the affected indigenes who spoke with our correspondent said they have been experiencing yearly cholera outbreak occasioned by perennial flooding, hence the fear of cholera this year too.
Narrating their ordeals, Ovie Jack and Sokari Goodboy Sokari said over 10,000 victims have been sacked from their homes and now sleeping on the streets at nights.
“We are now afraid of cholera outbreak because we have been experiencing such sickness every year due to flooding.
“Small businesses have crumbled in Ahoada West since this flood started and this year’s flood got to building roof level and up till now, the flood has not gone down.
“Some of us are based in Port Harcourt and before we were notified of the flood, all our electrical appliances and properties were already damaged by the flood.
“The entire communities of Akinima, Akieoniso, Oshie, Ususu JK1. Isua JK2 and Odawu JK3 in Ahoada West LGA have been badly affected by this year’s flood,” they said.
In ONELGA, communities such as Obagi, Ede, Ndoni and others have been submerged in water.
The victims also used the medium to call on the governments and other relevant bodies to come to their rescue by putting a lasting end to flooding in Ahoada West.
