Committee on Host Communities offers window to broaden engagements on Niger Delta issues-Rep Dekor

As the issues plaguing the oil producing communities continue to become a thing of concern, the House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, held an interactive hearing with companies and regulators.

Chairman of the committee, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Dekor in his remarks reaffirm the responsibilities and oversight mandate of the Host Communities Committee.

Dekor said the decision to invite companies and regulators operating within the Niger Delta Region(NGR) was part of the committee’s ongoing consultations and search for solutions to the myriad of challenges facing oil bearing communities of the Niger Delta and indeed other host communities of Nigeria.

He further said that the committee’s strategy is anchored on multi-level stakeholders consultations to advance conciliation and promote harmony among all.

” We therefore come in PEACE which stands for Partnership and Engagements for Advancing Community Emancipation. At the core of PEACE strategy is the activation of carefully identified partnership that will advance a sustained and sustainable resolution of the challenges of Host Communities as much as possible.

A key objective of this interaction is to appraise efforts of stakeholders in creating harmonious relations and forstalling build-up of grievances into restiveness that could jeopardize peace and disrupt legitimate economic activities”.

On their part, the Companies and Regulators who were invited for the interactive session were unable to furnish the committee with their presentations for some reasons the committee scowled at.

The Chairman in his resolve gave the erring stakeholders the privilege to make their presentations on a later date. The interactive session was however adjourned to 19th May, 2021.
