The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has sacked two lecturers – Boniface Igbeneghu and Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo – for soliciting sex from a reporter who posed as an admission seeker.
The Senate had set up a committee to investigate their demand which was caught on tape.
An undercover journalist, Kiki Mordi disguised as a 17-year-old prospective student in a BBC Investigative Series, Africa Eye.
The documentary, published in October 2019, focused on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and Ghana.
It nailed Igbeneghu, Oladipo, and University of Ghana lecturers Ransford Gyampo and Paul Butakor.
Igbeneghu was a lecturer in the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies.
The former sub-dean, Faculty of Arts, was sacked as head pastor of a local Foursquare Gospel Church at the start of the scandal.
Oladipo lectured at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. The duo had been suspended.
A statement on Wednesday by UNILAG Registrar, Azeez Oladejo announced their dismissal for “misconduct”.
It disclosed that the Governing Council at its meeting on May 31, 2021, approved the decision.
Oladejo said the action was in line with section 18 of the University of Lagos Act 1967.
“Council further directed that the management should review the sexual harassment policy as may be necessary and institute effective strategies to prevent future occurrence”, he added.
