Governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 general elections in Rivers State, Engr Biokpomabo Festus Awara, has announced his formal defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Awara who spoke exclusively on his defection said the move was inspired by the desire to make the state work again, stressing that with the APC, there is hope for the state.
“I am joining forces with the APC to bring Rivers State back on developmental track. I decided it was time to join the people who actually gave me hope, and to make Rivers State work again,” he said.
The former governorship hopeful expressed worry that the state is currently not working, a situation which he said is because the Governor Nyesom Wike does not entertain ideas or suggestions from others.
“Collective ideas make a community progress. No individual knows it all. Inspiration from God does not get to just one person. It spreads. If you are such a person that insists that it is only your own idea that will work, and you refuse to listen to others, that society cannot move forward and that is what Rivers State is experiencing,” he noted.
He urged his supporters to continually support him in his new platform to move Rivers State forward.
Awara is expected to be formally received into the party on Saturday at the unveiling of the new party secretariat in Port Harcourt.
Meanwhile, the arrival of the second runner-up in the 2019 gubernatorial polls in Rivers State is touted to bring another twist to the tussle for who becomes flag-bearer of the party in 2023.
Leader of the party in the state and transportation minister, Chihuike Rotimi Amaechi had severally expressed his desire for a riverine governor in 2023 and Awara being a riverine former governorship candidate from the Kalabari extraction and the minister’s ally maybe the ‘silencer’ in the camp.
It is also believed that his defection to the APC at this point when the party is preparing for congresses may have been influenced largely by Amaechi.
