Exam malpractice: RSG withdraws license of 21 private schools, demote 14 principals

… We are innocent- Ranjenny’s

By: Felix Ikpotor

The Rivers State Government has withdrawn the license of twenty-one Privates Secondary Schools and demoted Principals of the Fourteen Government secondary schools derecognised by the West African Examination Council, WAEC over alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the 2021 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, WASSCE.

The  State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday, condemned the act of examination malpractice allegedly perpetrated by the schools.

He said the ministry  met with the affected schools shortly after the letter of derecognition was received from WAEC, stressing  that the sanctioned was  to deter other schools  from participating in the act.

Meanwhile, the management of Ranjenny’s High School, Ogale In Eleme, one of the school affected by the sanction have said it is innocent of the allegation of examination malpractice leveled against it.

The Founder /Proprietor of the school, Dr Roselyn Ngelale in a statement said they were shocked by the action of WAEC as the school has never been involved in such act.

While expressing readiness to coorporate with WAEC  and the state government, the school urged pupils and guardians to remain calm.

The statement in full:

The attention of the Management of Ranjenny’s High School, Ogale In Eleme local government area of Rivers State has been drawn to a list of derecognised schools by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over allegations of examination malpractice in the 2021 WASSCE.

We are indeed shocked and taken aback at the inclusion of Ranjenny’s High School in the list of 35 schools derecognised in Rivers State.

For the records, Ranjenny’s High School was founded in 1996 and has remained one of the flagship schools in education excellence, management and administration in Rivers State.

Even more instructive is the fact that since the inception of the school, we have not registered more than 40 students for WAEC each year, just as we do not register external candidates owing to our strict adherence to international best practices.

Ranjenny’s High School has never been found wanting in the conduct of any examination and as a matter of fact, we completely abhor examination malpractice. All our students can back up this fact.

Additionally, supervisors who conduct exams in our school over the years can also attest to the fact that we do not engage in exams misconduct.

It is on record that for the past six years, Ranjenny’s High School has been registering candidates for JAMB, in addition to conducting CBT on behalf of JAMB without a single blemish.

Thousands of students who have written JAMB in Ranjenny’s High School will attest to our no nonsense disposition to examination malpractice.

We want to believe that there is a mistake somewhere as this allegation does not sit with the sweat, industry and honour of our graceful founder.

To this end, we are fully ready to cooperate with WAEC and the Rivers State Ministry of Education to unravel those wanting to potray our school in bad light.

We wish to assure parents, guardians and students of Ranjenny’s High School to please remain calm as we will do all within our powers to clear the name of our school.
