Rivers 2023: Ogonis unite for governorship

…Warn against abuse of leaders on social media

By: Felix Ikpotor

Ogonis in Rivers State have vowed to throw their weight behind any of their son or daughter vying for the governorship position in the forth coming general elections.

They also rejected the deputy governorship position.

This was contained in a communique issued by a group known as  the Ogoni United Family (OUF) after their meeting held in Bori, traditional headquarters of Ogoni ethnic nationality on Saturday.

Coordinator of the group, Dominic Dumekpigi while reading out a sixteen point communique noted that the Ogonis have supported other  ethnic groups in the past and as such should be supported to produce the next governor of the state in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice.

The communique reads in parts: ‘

That we  shall support all our political leaders with genuine interest of our people vying for any political office that will benefit us as a people.

“That ever since the creation of Rivers State in 1967, no Ogoni man or woman has been a governor, deputy governor, speaker of the state assembly or chief judge. Therefore, the demand for a governorship position is of utmost importance to us the Ogonis”.

It added: “That we the Ogonis do not want a deputy governorship seat but the governorship seat. That we shall mobilise massively for any of our son vying for the office of the governor of Rivers State.

“That we call on other ethnic groups and non indigenes residing in the state to support us in the quest to produce a governor come 2023 general elections as a way if reciprocating our kind gesture for equity, fairness and justice”.

Dumekpigi while reading the communique cautioned against abuse of Ogoni leaders on the social media.

“We wish to warn all social media users, individuals and groups within and outside Ogoni to refrain from abusing our leaders irrespective of political divide or interest”.

The group promised to mobilise Ogonis to massively enrol in the ongoing voters registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
