Oil spill hits Ogoni community as youths demand clean-up, compensation

Oil spillage has occurred in Nonwa community of Tai local government area of Rivers State.

The incident we gathered was noticed at the weekend.

Community sources say the spill is from a facility owned by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC in the area.

Meanwhile, youths of the area have now given the company 48 hours to immediately swing into action and clean-up the area and also pay compensation to owners affected farmlands.     

The Tai chapter of Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) in a statement by its publicity secretary, Samuel Deemor said if nothing is done at the expiration of the ultimatum, they will mobilize for action against the company.

The statement reads: “The attention of the OYF Tai Chapter, have been alerted of an oil spill   due to the negligence of  Shell Petroleum Development Company(SPDC), on its pipelines which has coursed nothing but serious damages to the good people of Nonwa Tai Community in Tai LGA Rivers State.

“The OYF Tai chapter accused the Shell Petroleum Development Company(SPDC), for negligence and lack of maintenance on the pipelines”.

“We hereby call on SHELL, for an immediate clean-up and compensation to the Nonwa Tai Community.

“We are giving the SHELL, 48hrs ultimatum to key into our demands, failure to comply within this period, then they left us with no option than to mobilize 1 million Tai Youths for a stoppage of Shell in Nonwa Tai Community and Tai LGA at large”.
