Delay in allocation: Rivers NULGE threatens to shut Globeus Bank

By: Felix Ikpotor

Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) has threatened to occupy the office of Globeus Bank in Port Harcourt over alleged delay in releasing federal allocations meant for  councils in the state.

NULGE said the delay in release of the funds to councils even after federal government has release the monthly allocation to the bank has caused its members untold hardship as salaries are not paid as at when due.

President of NULGE in Rivers State, Clifford Paul stated this in a statement in Port Harcourt.

He called on the Rivers State Government to intervene or direct the movement of the local government allocation to another bank.

He said: “We have observed with dismay the continued gross incapacity on the part of the Globeus Bank Limited as evidence in its inability, refusal or neglect to dispense Local Government allocations to Councils for payment of workers’ salaries and delivery of other essential services to rural dwellers, several days after each meeting of Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC)”.

“This action of the bank has continued to occasion late payment of local government workers salaries and hardship to the workers and their families. We condemn in its entirety this insensitiveness, unserious and lackadaisical attitude of the bank, which is at variance with all known norms, ethics and Nigerian banking laws”.

“We are pleading on His Excellency, Chief (Barr)  Nyesom Ezenwo Wike – CON, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, to call the management of the Bank to order or direct the movement of the Local Government Allocation to another bank, that has the capacity for speedy and efficient delivery on its mandate of dispensing financial services to its customers or the workers in the Twenty Three (23) Local Government Councils of River State will have no other options than to occupy the Globeus Bank and press home our demand”.
