East-West Road: Ogoni youths plan another protest

Over one year after Ogoni youths in conjunction with Eleme local government and other organisations blocked the Ogoni axis of the East-West Road, the youths are now contemplating another protest due to the worsening nature of the road.

President of Ogoni Youths Federation (OYF), Comrade Legborsi Yamaabana while appearing on a live radio programme in Port Harcourt said the youths and users of the road are fed-up with the failure of the federal government to fix the road.

“Enough of the deceit, enough of the politics, the Ogonis and indeed the Niger Deltans have been deceived fir far too long as it has to do with the state of this road and it’s immediate reconstruction. We have passed every hurdle on every discussion connecting,  pertaining and relating to the reconstruction of this road and the only thing we seek for is that government should make hay while the sun shines and mobilize contractors to commence work on that road. Anything short of these, we shall mobilise our ranks and files  in conjunction with PENGASSAN, tanker drivers and other critical stakeholders to carry out the season two of season two of East-West Road protest,” he said.

Port Harcourt Spectator reports that on June 26th 2021, youths from the four Ogoni speaking LGA in conjunction with other critical stakeholders blocked the road for almost one week, forcing the federal government to mobilise tractors to cite. However, since the strike was called off till now no visible job has been done on the road forcing the youths to want to regroup for another protest.
