A family physician and Medical Director of Newyou Hospital, Port Harcourt , Rivers state Dr. Chijioke Mbaelu has warned against excess consumption of carbonated beverages and other sugary drinks as they can expose one to sicknesses like Diabetes.
The family physician in a chat with our reporter said carbonated drinks are not healthy for everyone irrespective of age especially people with family history of diabetes.
He said, “sugary drinks can make one gain weight and obesity makes one prone to type two diabetes”
According to Dr. Mbaelu, these factors can make one prone to diabetes “Lack of exercise, increasing age, obesity and family history”
He also said that “the diabetes in children is the type 1 kind of Diabetes which usually occur due to lack of insulin”
He however stated that “too much sugar over works ones pancreas to be secreting too much insulin which is not good for the body . These insulin can ware out and there will be sugar intolerance which will ultimately lead to diabetes as one advances in age”.
He said “this excess calories are usually converted to fat which will eventually lead to obesity and will also lead to diabetes because people who are fat are prone to diabetes.
