Protesters comprising women, men and youths of Omagwa Community in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, early hours of Sunday, blocked the Port Harcourt International Airport road protesting the killing of a community youth by the police.
Reports said policemen from the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command, shot and killed Chikuma Egbule, a youth from Omagwa Community which sparked the protest.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters carried the corpse of the slain youth to the Omagwa Divisional Police station but were chased away by officers of the command before by resorted to blocking the road causing major gridlock on the ever-busy airport road.
Responding to the incident, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the officer who shot the Egbule has been arrested and detained by the Command while the corpse has been deposited in a morgue.
She said while responding to inquiries on the incident that: “The command is aware, and the CP is on top of the situation. Normalcy has now been restored, and adequate security is present on ground to prevent any breach of peace.
“The corpse has been deposited at the morgue while the police officers have been detained while investigation is ongoing.”
