The Police in Rivers State have reportedly detained the President of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), Nubari Saatah, over a planned protest against President Bola Tinubu’s emergency rule in the state.
The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, has sparked widespread condemnation from activists and civil rights groups, who view it as an attempt to stifle free speech.
Sources say the police had initially invited the NDC Spokesperson, Mudiaga Ogboru, for questioning. However, in a surprising move, they arrested the group’s president instead.
Ogboru, who had received police invitations from both Lagos and Rivers, described the arrest as a clear case of intimidation.
“This will not silence the voices of the Niger Delta people,” he vowed.
Meanwhile, Civil rights groups have condemned the arrest, warning against efforts to stifle dissent in the oil-rich region. The development has raised concerns about the growing trend of crackdowns on free speech and peaceful protests in the country.
Although the Rivers State Police Command is yet to confirm the arrest, sources say he’s been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
