Youths Raise Concern Over Delay in Resumption of Oil Exploration in Ogoniland

Some youths of Ogoni extraction in Rivers State have expressed worry over the delay by the Federal Government in resuming oil exploration  in the area.

‎Recall that oil exploration activities have been halted in Ogoniland for over 30 years following the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and his eight Ogoni brothers.

‎However, President Bola Tinubu upon assumption of office, vowed to resume oil exploration in the area and had since then been putting in place measures to fast track the process.

‎However, the youths under the aegies of Ogoni Youth Coalition Movement (OYCM), said while they acknowledge the complex history surrounding oil operations in their communities, they also believe that the time has come for a balanced and
forward-looking approach that prioritizes development, transparency, and the welfare of the people.

‎According to a statement issued by the leader of the group, Tee Fred Giadom, said many youths in the area face severe hardship and are uncertain about their future due to the lack of economic activities in the area. They urged President Tinubu to fast track the process to ensure resumption of exploration activities in the area.

‎”Your Excellency, many young people in Ogoni land today face severe economic hardship, limited employment opportunities, and growing frustration about the future.

‎”The continued delay in restarting oil exploration-despite ongoing consultations, environmental remediation efforts, and national assurances has contributed to a sense of uncertainty and marginalization amongst our youths.

‎”We strongly believe that the responsible resumption of oil exploration, guided by strict environmental safeguards and genuine community participation, can unlock meaningful economic opportunities for our people, ” he said.

‎Giadom added that restarting exploration in the area  has the potential to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, improve infrastructure, and restore hope to a generation that is eager to contribute positively to the growth and stability of the region and country.

‎”Your administration has consistently emphasized economic reforms, inclusiveness, and national development. In this spirit, we respectfully urge your government to expedite the necessary processes required to resume oil exploration in Ogoni land while ensuring that environmental restoration, community engagement, and fair benefits for host communities remain central to the process, ” the youth group said.

‎The youths also called for the establishment of clear communication channels between the Federal Government, Dialogue Committee, relevant stakeholders, and representatives of Ogoni youths to ensure transparency and build trust moving forward.

‎They expressed their trust in the leadership of President Tinubu to take decisive actions that will bring renewed hope and sustainable development to the people of Ogoni.
