Management of Wisdom Gate International School in Port Harcourt, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a pupil in its care, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the school described the incident as devastating, noting that its thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.
According to the statement, the child was attended to immediately after the incident and rushed for urgent medical care. The school added that the matter was promptly reported to the relevant authorities and that it is fully cooperating to ensure a thorough and transparent review.
It was gathered that the two-year-old pupil identified as Wynne Kabari Akekue, died shortly after being dropped off at school by her mother in the morning, as sources revealed that an old bookshelf reportedly collapsed on her even though the school authority had earlier claimed it was books that fell on her while she was resting.
The school management acknowledged the concerns raised by parents and the wider community, assuring that the safety and well-being of all pupils remain its top priority, while emphasizing that existing safety standards and protocols are being upheld and reinforced.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a child in our care. Our hearts are with the family at this incredibly painful time, and we extend our sincere condolences as they grieve this devastating loss.
“Immediately following the incident, the child was attended to without delay and taken for urgent medical care. The matter was promptly reported, and we have been fully cooperating with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent review,” the statement read.
The school further reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that it has not withheld any information from the authorities at any time.
It noted that further public comments would be limited out of respect for the grieving family and the ongoing review process, while remaining open to lawful and constructive engagement.
“We understand the concerns this situation has raised among parents and the wider community. We wish to assure all concerned that the safety and well-being of every child entrusted to us remain our highest priority. We continue to uphold and reinforce our established safety standards and protocols.
“We remain committed to openness and accountability, and we are fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities. At no time have we withheld information from them.
“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing process, we will refrain from further public commentary. However, we remain open to lawful and constructive engagement. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family during this difficult time.”
