Assembly asks Council chairmen to budget for flood emergency

The Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment has urged chairmen of the twenty three local government areas of the state to include intervention funds for flood emergencies in their annual budgets.

Dumle Maol, the Chairman of the Environment Committee, stated this while addressing journalists at the end of the committee’s interface with council chairmen on their level of preparations in managing flood crisis in their respective LGAs.

Maol who is the lawmaker representing Gokana Constituency said the committee will carry out oversight functions on all the LGAs of the state to substantiate claims of preparedness by the chairmen before turning in its final report on the floor of the house.

Speaking while appearing before the committee, Chairman of Ogu/Bolo local government area, Navy Captain Erasmus Victor, said funds have been set aside to carter for citizens of the area in the event of flood crisis.

Local Government Chairmen of Opobo/Nkoro, Emohua, Ogu/Bolo and Gokana also appeared before the committee on Monday.
