River State Police Command says it has arrested the officers involved in the killing of a 20-year-old Daniel Chibuike Ikeagwuchi at Elelenwo in Obio/Akpor Local Government area.
Daniel who goes by the stage name Sleek was shot dead on Saturday after police officers who tried to arrest him and his friend Reuben began to scream that they were thieves which attracted a mobile police officer attached to a supermarket to release bullets on him.
The Command Spokesperson SP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, said after a preliminary investigation by the DPO of Elelenwo Police Station, CSP Chima Nnaji, arrested and transferred the sergeant and four other Police Officers from anti-kidnapping unit involved in the incident to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
According to him, the leader of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit on patrol along Elelenwo wanted to arrest one Daniel Ikeagwuchi but Sergeant Isaiah Ben attached to 35 PMF Jigawa, but on guard duty at an Estate in Elelenwo, allegedly shot the deceased. On the receipt of the report, the DPO, CSP Chima Nnaji immediately ordered that Daniel who was bleeding be taken to the hospital, but he eventually died and was deposited at the UPTH Mortuary.
Meanwhile, the family of late Daniel Chibuike Ikeagwuchi is demanding for justice over the death of their Son.
Elder sister to the deceased, Maureen Ikeagwuchi in an interview with newsmen called on the Police Command to ensure the matter is not swept under the carpet.
She said the family will do everything within the ambit of the Law to ensure justice is done.
Miss Maureen revealed that nothing incriminating was found on his brother neither did he commit any crime to warrant been shot.
She, however, condemned the inhumane treatment melted out to her younger brother by the Officers of Anti-Kidnapping Unit and a Mopol officer guarding a supermarket at Elelewon, as he was dragged around under the sun while bleeding, instead of been rushed to the hospital.
Speaking, a Human Rights activist in the State, Prince Wiro who is also Secretary, Board of Trustees of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign called on the Commissioner of Police to ensure justice is served in the matter.
Wiro urged the Commissioner to demonstrate that he does not tolerate human rights abuses as promised.
