Scores escape death as truck rams into shop on East-West Road

Traders, travellers and shop owners around the popular Tribel Global Motors at Eligbolo community along East-West Road in Port Harcourt are now thanking their lucky stars as no casualty or injury was recorded after a truck conveying plastic waste lost control and ran into a bar beside the transport company early this morning.

Eyewitnesses said that the truck which was coming from the Rumuokoro axis of the road was surprisingly not on high speed when the incident occurred.

An eyewitness, Michael Ossai, blamed the accident on technical fault.

“How it happened is still surprising. It was not speeding. We saw it coming. Suddenly, it started bending from the Brain Field area, and then faced here. Before we knew what was happening, [it] has jumped the pavement, jumped the gutter, and entered this bar.”

Ossai said that if not for the Thursday morning sanitation exercise being observed in the area, and which saw business outlets closed, the story would have been different.

Attendants at wholesale drinks outlet and a roadside inn both beside the bar corroborated Ossai’s story.

They said if the incident had happened in the evening, it would have been a deeply sad story.

Our correspondent reports that good samaritans volunteered to control the traffic jam already building as a result of the accident.
