Rivers council boss moves to revive moribund pottery industry

…Approves project for every community

Chairman of Asari-Toru local government area in Rivers State, Onengiyeofori George has approved the revival of the moribund pottery industry in Ilelema Community in the council.

The ASALGA council boss made the approval in a meeting with Supervisors and Special Advisers and other principal officers of the council.

 Approval was also given for one project each in all the communities of the council.

George who described pottery as sacred and healthy, said that drinking water from a clay pot does not cause pneumonia or other disease caused by cold water.

While appreciating the unique nature of pottery to the society, the ASALGA boss said that pottery in its traditional setting is unique as it is manually made, noting that the raw materials used in making pottery are clay and water which are commonly found only in Ilelema community throughout the length and breadth of the Kalabari Kingdom.

The council chairman was of the view that reviving pottery enterprise in Ilelema community will eventually become an impetus to poverty alleviation and self-reliance among youths and women folks in the council.

He however, concluded that the council will engage the community in preparation for the revamping of the pottery industry, stressing that the enterprise will have multiplier impacts on domestic and technological development if properly harnessed.

Recall that the paramount ruler of Ilelema Community, chiefs, youth leader and women leader a fortnight ago, presented  amongst other things to the council, the resuscitation of the pottery industry in Ilelema Community.
