By: Felix Ikpotor

The federal government has approved the appointment of Dr. Ferdinand Giadom as the new Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project, HYPREP.

According to a press release signed by Saghir El-Mohammed, the Director of Press, on behalf of the Minister of State for Environment said his appointment is for a four (4) year term and is with immediate effect.

Dr. Giadom from gokana in Rivers State is a holder of Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Environmental Geology and Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology, both from the University of Port Harcourt, and Master of Philosophy Degree in Environmental Management.

He takes over from Professor  Philip Shekwolo who had been acting capacity since the sack of the former PC, Dr. Marvin Deekil .

His appointment followed series of agitation by the people of Ogoni for someone from their ethnic group to spearhead the interventionist agency.

Groups such as Ogoni Development Drive led by Lenu Solomon were amongst other notable interest groups from the area which vehemently opposed the choice of Shekwolo as PC.
