Rivers assembly workers threatens showdown over poor welfare

… Give 7-days ultimatum

Workers in the Rivers State House of Assembly (RVHA) under the aegis of Parliamentary Staffs Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the leadership of the assembly to address the  plethora of challenges facing the workers or risks shutting down of the Blue Chambers.

The decision was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of PASAN Rivers State, Comrade Comfort Otuene and Secretary, Comrade Amonia Amaso respectively.

The statement said the decision was reached at a congress meeting held by the association on the 27th of April, 2022.

According to PASAN, their grievances followed the deplorable state of the assembly complex, non-conducive working environment, withdrawal of canteen services, dirty toilets, non-nvailability of drugs in the assembly clinic, non-payment of temporary staffers for over two years now.

Other grievances they enumerated includes; epileptic power supply, non-supply of water, non-replacement of old and dilapidated furniture, lack of stationeries, non-payment of benefits due staffers, non-implementation of the Consolidated  Salary Structures ( CONLESS) amongst others despite the increase in overheads cost to the assembly.

The statement added: “Sequel to the above, Congress directed that 7 days notice commencing from Thursday 5th May to Friday 13th May 2022 be issued to the management to address all the lingering issues affecting staff welfare or the union will be left with no other option that to resuscitate the earlier suspended strike action immediately after the expiration of the notice”.

The workers however, reiterated their commitment to serve but urged management to speedily resolve all issues raised to make for harmonious industrial relations and wellbeing of staffers in the assembly.
