Expert harps on skills devt for youths to fight insecurity

By: Felix Ikpotor

Mr Franklin Obadiah,  a skills development expert has emphasized the need for youths to be engaged in skills to curb restiveness and other social vices in the society.

Obadiah who is the president of Skills Development Centre, Rivers State, stated this in a press briefing towards the official commissioning of the centre.

He said crime is prevalent in the society because so many persons are jobless.

Obadiah said the centre when fully operational, will  equip members of the society with the needed skills to compete and earn a living in the competitive world.

“Some persons are forced into crime because of the condition they find themselves, so what we intend to do here is to see how to equip people with requisite skills for survival. People pay you for the services you render and you can only render what you have capacity to deliver, so if you don’t have any skill, you must definitely have challenges in life.

“Our expectation is that when people are empowered with skills, some vices and restiveness in the society won’t be there. Many people are having nothing to do because they don’t have the requisite skills to function in any productive activity,” he stated.

He explained further that the centre has 120 skills areas structured under agriculture and agro-allied services, information and communication technology, fashion and garment making, catering services, civil and engineering services and innovation, creativity and productivity development.

The president said the centre is in partnership with Rivers State Ministry of Youths Development, federal agencies, local councils in the state and private individuals.

He disclosed that the centre will be officially commissioned to absorbed trainees on the 23rd of November, 2023.
