I have no money to refund – Abati tells EFCC

Former Spokesman to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that he has no money to refund to the government.

Abati who was recently arrested by the anti-graft agency for allegedly receiving the sum of N50m from former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki(rtd) was quoted by Premium Times as telling interrogators that he had no immediate means of sourcing the amount for which he is being held in custody for.

  The ace journalist also informed the commission that he could not provide documentary evidence how he spent N50 million he collected, adding that he disbursed the sum as cash and material gifts to journalists during the 2015 campaign.

The source said, “We thought he would be able to pay N5 million yesterday, but it turned out that he doesn’t have any money.”

EFCC had earlier granted Abati bail after asking him to drop his International Passport and produce a surety of not below level 16 in the Civil Service as part of the conditions for his release.
