Panic in Rivers community over chieftaincy tussle

There is uneasy calm in Ataba community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State as residents are now living in fear, following a renewed tussle for the kingship of the community.

Before now, the community had experienced chieftaincy tussle for over 38 years, which was resolved in 2015, following the judgment of an Appeal Court on the matter.

But the battle seems not to be over as there are indications that some persons, who are not satisfied with the ruling of the court, have commenced a move to sack the incumbent paramount ruler of the community and have filed fresh court papers.

Commenting on the development, the Paramount Ruler, His Royal Highness, King Benson Mgbo-Awaji Hebron, Egwenre Oruk XVII, Okan-Ama of Ataba, noted that the move by some individuals in the area was for their selfish interest and not that of the community.

The monarch lamented that some people were collaborating with politicians to sack him from the throne and cause trouble in the community.

The paramount ruler, who noted that the stool was not in contention after the court judgment, wondered why some people in the community have allowed themselves to be used to foment trouble over the throne.

In the meantime, Chief Isaac Irawaji, Oruk XVI, who is the Traditional Prime Minister of Ataba, has urged those behind the moves to sheathe their sword and allow peace to reign in the community.
