Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mrs. Ibim Semenitari has emphasized the need to end all forms of marginalization of women in the society.
The NDDC boss stated this during the presentation of a stage play titled “Little Drops” written by Prof. Ahmed Yerima in commemoration of the International Women’s Day in Port Harcourt.
She pointed out that women all over the country has shown great capacity in driving development and as such they should be supported and structures put in place to compliment their contributions towards making Nigeria a better place for all.
The former Rivers State Commission for Information and Communication stated that the NDDC which was established to facilitate sustainable development of the Niger Delta region and the Niger Delta Master Plan places premium on women development and empowerment.
She disclosed that the commission has concluded arrangements for the building of the Girls Engineering, Mathematics and Science Centre as well as institute an award of excellence to encourage young girls in the region to embrace science and technology and also provide quality manpower to enable them participate in the oil and gas sector of the region.
On the movie, Semenitari said it showcases the environmental, economic and political challenges women of the Niger Delta are faced with daily as a result of the conflict in the region and further called for an end to all vices against women.
On her part, the wife of the Rivers State governor, Justice Suzzette Nyesom-Wike advocated for the eradication of poverty among women, gender parity and health of women.
She noted that women over the years have suffered from unfavourable cultural practices, rape, early marriage and other forms of harassment.
She urged men to do all they can not to destroy the generation of women and further called for the development of women for better home and society building.
