Rivers police yet to comment on killings

As gunmen attack police station, free detainees

The Rivers State Police Command is yet to issue a public statement on the deteriorating security situation in the state especially the killings that took place in Aluu in Ikwerre and other communities in Emohua local government areas of the state.

Suspected gunmen over the weekend killed 17 persons in Aluu community while several persons sustained injuries while over six persons where also killed in Omuanwa.

President of Ogbakor Ikwerre, Mr. Ikechi Benson who confirmed the incidence described the killings as barbaric.

Similarly, a student leader, Nwana Chitum has condemned the killings, stressing that the attack on the community which is predominated by students of the University of Port Harcourt is uncalled for, lamenting why the attack is always targeted at the student community.

He said some students of the school also sustained injuries in the attack.

A security expert, Efe Nwanoku regretted that several days after the incidence took place, the police is yet to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, rampaging gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked a police station at Rumuji community in Emohua Local Government area of Rivers State.

The gunmen were reported to have during the unprecedented attack, shot at the officers on duty and broke the police cell, allowing all the detainees to escape.

The number of the escaped detainees is yet to be ascertained.

In another development, over eleven people have been killed in cult clashes in Ovogu, Rumuewhuo and Rumuji communities in Emohua Local government area of the State.

Phspectator learnt that nine people were shot dead in Ovogo community, two in Rumuji and two others in Rumuewuo communities.

A source close to Ovogo community while confirming the incident alleged that suspected Iceland cult group invaded the community, shooting indiscriminately to scare the people.

The source added that residents of Ovogo community woke-up Sunday morning and saw corpses littering the community.

“The boys notified the police about the attack but they thought it was a joke. They stormed the station and all the officers ran away. Those boys went to open the cell and allowed everybody to escape. They even carted away all their weapons.

“After that, they entered into my community, Rumuji and just started shooting anyhow. I later heard they entered Ovogo and Rumuewhuo and killed people there too. We need help here.”
