Rivers: Lawmakers disagree on proposed PH Poly

BY: Felix Ikpotor

Lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, RVHA, yesterday expressed different opinions over the proposed conversation of the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, RIVCAS to a polytechnic.

The lawmakers expressed their divergent views during the second reading of the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill, 2016.

Leading debate on the bill, lawmaker representing Khana Constituency1 in the assembly, Barieene Deeyah, aid although he is in support of the bill, but expressed worry over the fate of the Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori which he said is in dare need of infrastructure.

He equally called for the decentralization of schools in the state, stressing that despite the name, the school could still be cited at other parts of the state apart from Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Similarly, Edison Ehie, lawmaker representing Ahoada Constituency 2 corroborated the position of Deeyah and argued that his constituency has been neglected in the distribution of higher institution in the state.

He pointed out that Kenpoly is for the Ogoni/Andoni and Opobo axis of the state, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST for the Ikwerre axis while the Orashi axis of the state has been left out and stressed that if the school is cited in the area it would attract development to the area and ease traffic in the city as Rumuola where the school is currently located is already congested.

Nathaniel Uwaji representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 2 equally appealed to the house to recommend to the governor that the school be relocated to his constituency.

However, leader of the house, Martins Amaewhule, argued that the bill before the house was not on the citing of the school but mere conversation and change of name as the school has been operating as a polytechnic since 2016.

He noted that the name of the school has deprived it from benefitting from educational assistance from TETFUND and PTDF.

Other speakers such as the member representing Ogu/Bolo, Evans Bipi and Michael Chinda of Obio/Akpor Constituency1 all supported the conversion of the school to a polytechnic, stressing that there was nothing wrong in the state having more polytechnics as other states have more than one of such institutions.
