NCC suspends planned increase in price of data

Barely a few hours after the Senate passed a resolution asking Telecommunications Service Providers to stop the planned increase in data tariffs, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has announced the immediate suspension of the new tariff for data services by mobile operators.

Some telecommunications service providers had recently issued statements to subscribers though customised Short Messaging Services, SMS, intimating them of the imminent plans to increase tariffs on all mobile data purchased, with effect from Thursday, 1st December, 2016.

According to the service providers, the development was not unconnected with the new guidelines by the regulating agency of the government, the NCC.

Information reaching this publication has it that the NCC is taking the decision to allow for further consultations with relevant agencies and stakeholders, as directed by the Upper Legislative Chamber.
