Atleast, 1,686,000 victims of Bonga oil field spillage in Rivers State have dragged oil giant, Shell Nigeria Exploration Company, SNEPCO, before a United Kingdom court over its alleged failure to pay $3,600,191,206 as compensation to them and communities affected by the incident.
Director, Oil Spill Victims Vanguard, OSPIVV, Mr Harrison Jalla, disclosed this to newsmen in Warri, Delta State and said he filed a pre-action notice at the TCC High Court of Justice in London for the victims and communities.
He noted that it was unfortunate that the oil giant had allegedly failed to cushion the pains suffered by victims of the spill.
He alleged that about 40,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into the communities destroyed the environment.
“The pollution from the discharge which covered a distance of 185 kilometres along the Nigerian coast line compelled fishermen to desert the sea, polluted farmlands, vegetation and contaminated the environment in Ekeremo, Southern Ijaw and Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and Warri South West, Warri North and Burutu local Government Areas of Delta State and some riverine areas in Ondo State.”
