P-Harcourt Refinery begs community to help protect its facilities

PORT Harcourt Refining Company Limited, PHRC, has pleaded with its Eleme host communities, Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, to help protect oil installations in the area.

PHRC made the plea Thursday  at a two-day medical outreach for the host communities at Nchia, Ogale as part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility with over 3,000 persons benefitting.

Managing Director, PHRC, Shehu Malami, represented by the Manger, Administration, Martins Toluhi, told the host  communities that oil assets were the nation’s key source of wealth, adding that destroying them endangers public health.

“We call on our host communities to continue on the part of peace and negotiation using the Joint Community Relations Committee platform to resolve differences on issues that may arise in the course of our relationship,”he said.

He added: “this has been working and should be sustained. Host communities should ensure that oil and gas installations in their locality are protected to guarantee safety of their environment.”

3000 persons with various ailments benefitted the health charity with the PHRC promising that more projects would be cited in the areas soon.

Responding, Chief Aki Oluka, the Staff Bearer of Ogale community while acknowledging the gesture noted that massive oil pollution in Ogoni locality of the state left many residents with different health challenges, adding that needed intervention to address the danger has not been forthcoming for the people.

“It was in the report of the United Nation on Ogoni that the health of the people would be affected by the devastation, but after the report the much needed medical attention has not been provided”, Oluka lamented.
