A former Deputy Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Leyii Kwanee, has expressed sadness with the standard of legislation made by the 8th Assembly in the state, saying that the current Rivers lawmakers were not grounded in lawmaking.
Kwanee, who spoke on behalf of the Rivers State 7th Assembly on the platform of G-25, in Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, noted that there are many lapses in the proceedings of the state Assembly.
He noted that the executive arm of the government has cashed in on the situation and taken charge of the state legislature, describing the situation as pathetic.
Kwanee said: “The situation of the current Rivers State House of Assembly is pathetic. They need to be trained as it relates to their oversight functions. If they are well trained, they will know their functions. They have not been exposed to any legislative training, so they are green horns. To a greater extent, it has affected their legislation.”
The ex-lawmaker expressed worries over the level of insecurity in the state, adding that the executive must stand to its responsibility of providing adequate security for the lives and property of people of the state.
He however, called for the overhaul of the country’s security to be effective, adding that the menace of the herdsmen was worrisome.
