Shutdown of PHED facility throws Port Harcourt residents into darkness

Several parts and residents of Port Harcourt , including the Rivers State Government House remain cut off from public power supply by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) two days after the  shutdown of a major transmission station by Ogbunabali community over perceived epileptic powers supply.

Corporate Communications Manager of PHED, John Onyi whon confirmed the blackout said, “They shut down the whole place yesterday. They didn’t destroy property, but they chased away the operators on duty and forced them to switch off the system and cut supply to some parts of Port Harcourt, including Government House”

The PHED transmission station located at Izimiro Junction, Ogbunabali, Port Harcourt City local government area, is the source of supply down to Rumuolumeni, Government House, Port Harcourt Town, Rivers State University, Diobu, Mile 1, Mile 2, Agip and other areas in the state capital which are now in darkness.

The PHED spokesman however said, “The issues are being resolved. We met with them and the protest has stopped. The operation team has returned to the facilities but you know it will take some time to restore normalcy because of the forced shutdown.

“It is becoming too critical, becoming a social menace. At the slightest fault on the feeder, communities will just come to our office and block the gate. Government should come to our aid”, he appealed.
