Ogoni clean-up: Involve local content, MOSOP tells HYPREP

By: Felix Ikpotor

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has advised the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to ensure that the planned clean up of oil impacted sites in Ogoni is done in line with the local content laws of the country.

President of the Movement for Survival of Ogoni People Legborsi Pyagbara made the call when the Eleme kingdom leadership of MOSOP and its chapter visited him in his office in Port Harcourt.

Pyagbara said HYPREP must carry out the clean up exercise in line with the local content law so as to ensure Ogonis benefit from the project economically.

He said : “In our own case, we have to interpret that local content to be for Ogoni people. So if there is a project in Ogoni, we want a situation where the local content benefit from that project should be accessed by the Ogoni people in the area where the clean up is going to be done. So,our own argument has been that local content should be relative to the Ogoni people who are going to be impacted by the project implementation on the ground and I think that is also being accepted.”

HYPREP had recently assured that it was prepared to start the actual clean up of the area.
