Oyigbo monarch warns against indiscriminate arrest by soldiers

By: Felix Ikpotor

Paramount ruler of Oyigbo in Oyigbo local government area of Rivers State, Eze Mike Nwaji has warned military authorities against indiscriminate arrest of persons in the area.

Eze Nwaji gave the warning against the backdrop of the reported arrest of persons by the military authorities.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had earlier imposed a 24 hours curfew in the area and also directed the army to fish out members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, who took advantage of the #ENDSARS protest to cause mayhem in the area, leading to the death of some security agencies and stealing of riffles.

The paramount ruler said residents can no longer move freely due to the activities of security men in the area, stressing that some persons were unlawfully arrested on suspicion that they are members of IPOB.

“I am calling on the people of Oyigbo to be careful on how you use the soldiers against your brothers. What people are doing now is to go and call soldiers that someone is a member of IPOB, whereas he is not and soldiers will arrest the person, beat him and detain him and later it will be discovered that the person is not a member of IPOB,” he said.

He pointed out that the real IPOB members that caused the mayhem have all ran away from the area and leaving innocent people to bear the brunt of their actions.
