Atsuwete’s death: Group chide NBA over silence

By: Felix Ikpotor

A group, International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights, ISSJHR, is not happy that ten days after popular Port Harourt- based lawyer, Ken Atsuwete was murdered by alleged assassins in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, the national executive council of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, was yet to make a public statement on the matter.

Chancellor of ISSJHR, Dr. Omenazu Jackson in a statement made available to Phspectator, frowned at the continued silence of the national executive council of the NBA, adding that the death of the human rights lawyer may have been a parting gift for them after their conference held in the state.

Jackson said: “This unfortunate incident have not attracted the comment of the NBA national Exco, so sad . The death of Ken their colleague may have served as a befitting parting gift for their conference in Port Harcourt, hence their silence in that regard”

Late Ken Atsuwete was one of the notable voices at the just concluded NBA National Conference held in Port Harcourt, Capital of Rivers State.

Commenting on the security situation in the state, the group said: “The death of Barr Ken Atsewete who is a renowned civil rights activist is indeed sad and a pointer to the level of human carnage in Rivers State”.

Continuing, ISSJHR said, “the level of insecurity in the state is the fallout of the inordinate ambition of a crooked political class. The youths who perpetrate this crime against humanity were armed for electoral purposes.”

While calling on the political class to fear God, the group frowned at the killings in the state and posited that until the killers of the erudite lawyer are apprehended and prosecuted the conscience of the state will remain in dark covens.

It further called on the security agencies to immediately unravel the killers of Atsuwete.

Phspectator recalls that last week a coalition of civil society organizations including the ISSJHR had protested the death of Ken Atsuwete in Port Hacourt.
