COVID-19: Public schools lack capacity to observe protocol – Rep Abiante

Member representing Andoni/Opobo Federal Constituency, Hon Awaji-Inombek Abiante, has said public schools in the country lack the capacity to observe COVID-19 protocol.

Abiante, who is a member of the House of Representatives Committee On Basic Education spoke while appearing on Channels Television, yesterday.

He said public schools lacked the capacity to contain the spread of the virus.

The lawmaker also accused the federal government of not doing enough to provide basic means of adhering to the protocols.

Abiante said: “Our concerns have been that nobody sustainably has done anything relative to providing the very basic means of adhering to the protocols as laid down by the government, especially with the public schools.

“There are schools in this country where the pupils sleep under trees, the challenge of accommodation is very huge in these schools.

“What has the government done between the first wave of the COVID-19 and the second wave?

“We have no data suggesting and submitting that majority of the schools have the capacity and the willingness to ensure that the COVID-19 protocols are kept”.

Recall that schools had yesterday resumed across the country despite a second wave of COVID-19.

Despite the spike of the virus, some parents have been reported to have refused their children from using face masks in school.
