Six operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have been arrested for allegedly extorting N150,000 from an undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt.
The policemen who were serving under the now disbanded Eagle Crack Squad are currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal and Investigation Department of the State Police Command, Punch reports.
The victim, a final year student identified as Victor who saw one of the police officer’s mobile phone in his car confirmed the arrest to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
But Victor expressed sadness that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) at the State CID was intimidating them the very day he took their statement shortly after the case was transferred from the Police headquarters.
He expressed surprise that the IPO told him and his friend that the statement they made at the Police headquarters was not credible.
He, however, urged the Commissioner of Police, Eboka Friday to prevail on his men to diligently carry out the order he (CP) has issued on the matter.
When contacted, a spokesman of the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni confirmed that the matter was at the SCID.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of ‘a non–governmental organization, ‘We The People’ Ken Henshaw expressed disappointed that it was taking the Police more than a week to make public its investigations on the Eagle Crack operatives.
Henshaw told our correspondent that to gain the confidence of the public, the new CP should ensure the officers are prosecuted if found culpable of the crime.
